As demand for AI technology grows, the race to build data centers is accelerating. Virginia, a major hub in this boom, is seeing rapid expansion as AI-driven infrastructure reshapes the landscape. However, this growth comes with a cost—data centers are encroaching on Civil War battlefields, threatening the state’s historic sites. Preservationists warn that without intervention, irreplaceable landmarks could be lost forever to digital expansion.

Data centers are a huge boost to the economy, creating thousands of jobs and bringing in billions in tax revenue. They help build up local infrastructure, support industries like construction and energy, and attract skilled workers.
