Perspectives
Despite the Trump administration's desire to relax environmental regulations and deprioritize green building initiatives, there remains a global push to make buildings carbon neutral. Regulators, investors, and occupiers continue to push for reduced carbon footprints, driving demand for energy-efficient buildings and onsite renewable energy. But, in the rush to achieve net-zero as quickly as possible, we may have overlooked a crucial question: What does net-zero actually mean?
Today, we examine the challenges of establishing clear, standardized definitions for net-zero buildings and the risks of failing to do so transparently. Erik Landry, Director of Climate Change at the standards organization GRESB, shares his insights on the best practices for measuring a property's carbon output—and why they matter.
Regardless of who is President, the demand for green, energy-efficient buildings will persist. And for those committed to sustainability, there must be a reliable way to measure how green and energy-efficient a building truly is. Net-zero buildings remain part of our future—we just need to determine how to accurately define and assess them.
