Focus on Property Management
As the federal government tightens its belt, the real estate industry is feeling the impact—particularly when it comes to sustainability initiatives. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has taken a chainsaw (both figuratively and literally) to environmental programs, rolling back energy efficiency standards and canceling millions in Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds. With more cuts expected, the future of sustainable building incentives is increasingly uncertain.
Despite this governmental retreat, the momentum behind green building practices hasn’t disappeared. Corporate occupiers and real estate investors continue to prioritize sustainability—not just for environmental reasons, but because it makes financial sense. Rising energy prices and grid instability have made efficiency upgrades, smart building technology, and on-site renewable energy more attractive than ever.
From AI-powered energy management to microgrids and bi-directional EV charging, new technologies are driving the transition toward more resilient buildings. While federal support may be fading, the private sector is stepping up. Will this be the beginning of a new era where sustainability is driven less by policy and more by market forces?

To achieve zero-carbon buildings, we must improve access to affordable & efficient cooling. Policymakers can address this via clear guidance for passive cooling techniques, minimum energy efficiency standards for AC & proper disposal of AC refrigerants.
