Now let’s dig in!

The ‘Renters’ Revolt’ Continues With Formation of National Tenants Union

A Kansas City-based tenants’ rights advocacy group recently announced it has formed a national Tenant Union Federation. This ‘union of unions’ aims to help organizers nationwide push for federal rent protections.

KC Tenants has joined other tenant unions in Illinois, Kentucky, Montana, and Connecticut to form the new national coalition. Tara Raghuveer, founder of KC Tenants, will be the union’s director. She said the group will look at ways to expand national membership next year, and they’re working on building a training program for tenants across the U.S.

Affordable housing has become a major issue in the upcoming elections, and tenant organizing has increased nationwide. KC Tenants was founded in 2019 and has gained influence in Kansas City politics. Some successes for the group include advocating for a tenants’ bill of rights that was eventually adopted by the City Council and helping elect some of its own leaders to the City Council.

There’s no guarantee the new Tenant Union Federation will have the same success. However, President Biden and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris have supported some tenant organizers’ policy proposals, such as a national cap on rent increases. The multifamily industry is watching closely as a so-called ‘renters’ revolt’ takes hold and the political winds shift.
